In year 1962 with government decree №163/27.09.1962 the Laboratory for food products (for production of tins, sugars and butter) was reorganized into the Scientific Research Institute of Canning Industry (CANRI).In 1970 the Canning Research Institute was transformed into the Center for Scientific Researches and Development Activity after merger with the Institute of Vegetable Crops "Maritsa" and the Institute of Fruit Growing..
From 1974 the Canning Research Institute is an independent legal entity within the frames of the Scientific Production Complex "Georgi Dimitrov’’. During this period (up to year 1989) CANRI had staff of approximately 250 people, who worked in six sections: "Technology for preservation of fruits and vegetables," "Refrigrigeration technology, “Mechanization and automation of processes in the canning industry," Food Chemistry " , ‘’Microbiology of preserved foods’’, "Economics, organization and forecasting" and five-section “Introduction, “Standardization”, and “Scientific technical information”, “Project design” and “Design”. About that time, CANRI worked actively in all international programs of the Council Economical Mutual Assistance(CEMA), the Ministry of Economy and Higher Education. Served all enterprises from the “Bulgarplod’’ and Central Co-operative Union.
From 1989, CANRI is within the structure of the Agricultural Academy-Sofia. After political and economical changes in Bulgaria, the Institute redirected its activities to international research programs of the EU (COST IV, V, VI frame programs) U.S. (peanut CRSP), Italy, Ukraine and others, Ministry of Education and Science.
The CANRI’s staff has been reduced to 50 people, and base necessary equipment has been modernized and completely computer-operated.
